In this article, we'll break down the different costs of rebuilding a website in Webflow, as well as building a website on Webflow from scratch. We'll cover all the components a website needs, such as copy writing, content planning and a site map (UX strategy), SEO content strategy, graphics and image editing, and finally the branding and design. We will also cover technical costs to features like e-commerce, memberships, and 3rd party software.

So whether you're just getting started with Webflow or you're looking to overhaul your current website, read on for some insights into the cost of building a website in Webflow.

Cost of website in Webflow infographic ranging from $500 to $20,000

Cost of simple website development in Webflow

Most professional agencies start their Webflow development at a similar price of anywhere from $2000 to $5000 for a custom branded website. This usually includes a new UX strategy, improvement of your copy material, and a brand-new design as well as work on CRO (Conversion Rate Optimisation).

Cost of transferring a website to Webflow

If you need a 1:1 rebuild of an already existing website, this can be developed in Webflow at a cost anywhere from $500 to $2000. Since all the content and strategy is already laid out in the existing website, you just need the development time to get on the Webflow platform. Some of our clients have done this, as they have found that the Amazon Web Services that Webflow uses with its CDN  (Content Delivery Network) is a lot more reliable than their existing hosting providers, thus the switch in platforms. It also allows for flexibility and easier editing in the future to test new strategies and landing pages.

Cost of a Webflow site with Membership Functionality

If you want membership functionality on your Webflow site, development cost will range from $5000 to $9000. Then you're looking at an additional $29/month on top of your Webflow subscription to manage users in a safe and encrypted manner. This is spent on a 3rd party software called Memberstack.io.

With Memberstack, a developer can integrate all member's functionality, like logins, sign-ups, password resets, free and paid subscriptions, and gated content.

To give you an example of the extent this functionality can bring, we worked with Recondition.co.nz on their membership website. We developed a calculator script, and based on each user, we are able to calculate how much textile waste someone has saved based on their clothing purchases. For every 500g of purchased clothes, the member gets assigned a new prestige level that is then printed onto their order. Each user has their profiles, they can change their profile and background picture, name, password, view their level and order history.

Membership functionality can bring a wide array of additional features, such as comments and reviews, subscription payments, paid newsletters and much more!

Native membership functionality is already on Webflow! However, it is running in closed Beta and is not available for the wider public. Webflow announced their membership functionality in late 2021, and it should come out in late 2022. Stay tuned, as costs will change with less development needed once the membership feature comes out natively.

Cost of automations in Webflow with a CRM or other software

If you need to link your Webflow site to another software, such as a CRM or a developed calculator (see recondition.co.nz), the development cost for those functions will cost anywhere from $100 to $2000. Sometimes an integration can be as simple as hooking up a few webhooks to your CRM and relaying the information properly. This can take half a day of development and is quite cost-effective. However, if you need something more custom, like database inventory tracking relaying from your website to your software, it might take a week or two of development, increasing the cost closer to $2000.

Cost of Webflow site with E-commerce Function

If you need e-commerce functionality on your Webflow site, development cost will rage from $2000 to $9000. You're also looking at more expensive hosting, starting at $29/month to power the e-commerce part of your website.

Why does e-commerce cost more than a simple website build?

You can definitely find a freelancer or agency that will charge you the first quoted price of $2000 to $5000 for an ecommerce website. In terms of the design elements, and most content, this website build would cost the same as a simple branded website. After all, the ecommerce part is just plug and play, isn't it?

Short answer - yes, it is plug and play, and you don't need extra development. However, what we've seen over the years is that an ecommerce website without the proper UX strategy will not perform well.

Ecommerce UX is a field of study on its own, and it's different from regular website UX. In short, you need to think about the customer journey differently, as people come to your site with the intent to buy something right there and then. Getting someone to put in their card and buy something on the spot requires much more thought and strategy than someone inquiring for a free website audit ;)

Getting a cheap website on Webflow

If you are trying to save money, you can purchase a website template on Webflow that is suitable to your brand for anywhere from $24 USD to $129 USD. If you have the time to spare to project manage a developer, you can spend up to $500 to edit the template to your needs, with additional pages and sections for different content.

We recommend this route if you are starting off, and only just testing to see if your business idea works.

However, these templates, are well... TEMPLATES. Hundreds of websites look the same,  and it will be hard to stand out from the rest. They also lack the customizability needed for good conversions.

If you have the capabilities, this is a good route to take at the start. But keep in mind, that you won't be able to wear all the hats you need for a fully proficient website.

What you need to keep in mind when building a website on your own terms:

  • UX strategy
  • Brand messaging and copy writing
  • Call to action placement and incentives
  • Branding and brand recognition
  • SEO content & keyword optimisation
  • Image size optimisation
  • Professional graphic design
  • Plugging in analytics with event tracking
  • Professional photo editing
  • Website speed optimisation
  • Consistent visuals throughout the site

And that's just for a simple website. If you want to include any of the automations or ecommerce, be prepared to spend more time on learning everything.

If you can afford it, we recommend working with an agency that has experience in Webflow, as they will have all these facets covered in their team.

Cost of Webflow UX Strategy

To be honest, this will apply to most UX strategy, but we're talking about Webflow, so let's keep it that way. UX strategy on its own can cost anywhere from $500-$3000 depending on the size of your website and how many pages you need. If you have an ecommerce website, you'll likely need a more in-depth  UX strategy, which will cost more. If you're just rebuilding a simple website, you can get away with a less costly strategy.

What does UX strategy include?

A UX strategy includes figuring out what content goes on your website, how users will interact with it, and how to make the overall experience as seamless as possible.

To achieve this, there is a process agencies go through. Starting with the site map and mood board. The site map lays out where all the pages should be in terms of navigation and URLs. The mood board is a collection of images, colors, and fonts that help set the tone for the website. This makes sure the website will be readable, as well as easy and fun to engage with.

After these two steps comes wire framing. Wireframes are low-fidelity versions of the digital design that shows where content will live. At this stage, the copy and messaging is ready, along with the layouts.

Finally, come the prototypes, which are high-fidelity versions of the design. Prototypes are fully designed sheets which show how the website will actually look like.

How much does SEO cost on Webflow?

SEO is such a large topic in itself, that it is hard to include it in website development.  However, if we're just talking about the cost of rebuilding a website on Webflow, on average, agencies will charge $500-$1500 for a basic SEO setup on Webflow. If you have a smaller website with not that many pages, you can get away with paying less than that.

What does Webflow SEO setup include?

  • Optimisation of all images
  • Converting graphics into SVGs
  • Optimising the website speed
  • Writing out Title Tags and Meta Descriptions
  • Writing page content to be SEO ready
  • Adding alt tags to images
  • Attaching Webmaster tools and indexing pages on Google, Bing etc...
  • Attaching analytics (Not strictly SEO, but under this category)
  • Basic training of how to do SEO when writing your own content (like blogs)

If you are really serious about ranking high as a website, the best recommendation we can give is content production. If you can answer questions people are looking for, you are sure to rank if no one else is answering that question.

For advanced SEO, we recommend going with an SEO agency rather than a design/development one.

Cost of photo editing for a website

If you want to use photos or videos on your website, it will cost extra for the creation of these.

On average, photographers charge $100 per hour. Similar with videographers. Typically, design and development agencies don't take care of photoshoots, but can edit stock photos and photos you supply. Typically, for a small site, photo editing and screening costs anywhere from $150 to $500.

Usually, photo editing is included in the website design price.

Cost of creating graphics and animations for a website

Static graphics like illustrations or info-graphics will cost about $50 each. Animations can get costly, but a simple 3D animation of your product, or 2D, 2-second loop animation typically cost about $250 each.

The cost of this goes down with volume because some parts may be repetative. For example, if you need 6 custom icons designed, they would cost $150 instead of the $300.

However, this is just a very rough estimate. Usually, an agency accounts for this in the website design already, and this is at no extra cost.

Cost of branding and design for a website in Webflow

This is tough to estimate because it really depends on where your brand is standing at the moment. If an agency has to develop your brand from scratch, it may cost anywhere from $1500 to $5000 to create a logo and a brand style guide. However, if you just need some brand updates to make the website look fresh, this is usually included in the website build itself.

Usually things we would look at when thinking of rebranding:

  • Fonts
  • Usage of colours
  • Photos you use
  • Needed graphics
  • Your logo

Most of the time, you can avoid re-creating your brand, and simply just have an updated website with fresh design, that still suits your brand in the real world.

How much will it all cost together for a Webflow site?

So, how much will it cost you to build a website in Webflow? The price of your project will depend on the final website and all the elements outlined above. You can start as low as $500, and go as high as $9000. If you're working on a scale like Apple, you can expect costs of $1 million and upwards - but, these are mostly marketing and strategy costs from top tier agencies in the world.
